The BBC says "Yes" to Mo-Sys and Vizrt for the EU Referendum coverage

For the fourth time the BBC has chosen Mo-Sys’ StarTracker to provide the VR camera tracking while Vizrt takes care of the graphics. With two major political events - the local elections in May and the Referendum, where Britain decides whether or not to stay in the EU, in June - the BBC election studio has a busy schedule and they rely on technology they can trust. This is one reason the BBC chose Mo-Sys StarTracker for their compelling virtual graphics.

The reflective stars on the ceiling - still hanging from the local Election in 2014 - are building the tracking reference for three StarTracker systems simultaneously. Like the years before the StarTrackers are mounted to cameras on pedestals that will move around in the green screen area where Jeremy Vine will show the latest development with live-updated 3D-graphics.

New this year is the StarTracker mounted to the camera on the end of a 30ft Technocrane. Doing this allows free movements, creating more immersive shots, like sweeping from the "real” part of the studio to the "virtual" part. The absolute optical tracking also eliminates mechanical sensors, that in earlier set-ups where mounted to the Technocrane. Therefore no longer restricting the crane base to a fixed position in the studio.

Also for the first time, the birds view for the graphics is done with Mo-Sys robotics. A B20 robotic remote head with a ShotBox interface stores and plays back positions.

You can see the visually engaging results on the 24th of June as part of the BBC EU Referendum coverage and read an article about the local election here.
