NearTime

NearTime™ is an automated, cloud-based Unreal render service. As you record takes in VP Pro for real-time VFX on set, the camera movements are sent to the NearTime™ cloud for processing.

No more worrying about performance

NearTime rendering takes the pressure off the real-time render. You won't need to find the optimum real-time settings; instead, you can accept video game-quality graphics for your pre-viz and know that you will achieve cinematic quality later. All your renders are timecode-locked and packed full of metadata. Syncing the re-rendered backgrounds with your camera plates is as easy as syncing sound.

Choice of automated workflows

You choose whether you want to render everything immediately, render 'circle takes', or, after editing, render clips with handles (via EDL). NearTime is built on Unreal's Movie Render Queue, so you can pick the resolution, codec, EXR layers, and quality settings to suit your render budget. You can customize your own MRQ settings, add additional custom EXR layers, etc.

Choose your delivery

Choose your favourite delivery platform for the rendered files. NearTime supports Frame.IO, Adobe Flow Capture, and S3. (Need something else? Let us know!) If you need to use traditional VFX tools, NearTime can also export FBX files for raw camera tracking and lens distortion.

Local render

Do you have a bunch of PCs sitting around overnight that you would like to make use of? No problem—just run our NearTime Agent, and you can boost your cloud render resources with your own on-prem hardware.

Render from any point in time

Perforce is Epic's recommended version control system for Unreal Projects. Mo-Sys can offer this as a service or help you get started with your own Perforce. Once you have this, you will be able to render different versions or even entirely different environments against the same camera movement.

FAQs
Can NearTime export data for traditional VFX tools and pipelines?

NearTime can export FBX files containing raw camera tracking and lens distortion data for use in traditional VFX tools. This makes it possible to integrate NearTime cloud-based rendering into broader virtual production rendering pipelines that include third-party compositing and 3D applications.

How are NearTime renders synchronised with camera plates and tracking data?

NearTime uses timecode-locked renders packed with metadata and camera tracking data to ensure easy synchronisation with camera plates. This makes syncing the re-rendered backgrounds with live-action footage as straightforward as syncing sound.

How does NearTime help manage costs compared to traditional post-production VFX?

By automating Unreal cloud re-renders and avoiding extensive manual post-production work, NearTime can deliver high-end VFX shots at a fraction of the cost of traditional VFX processes. Productions can “turn up all the dials” for quality without incurring the full expense and time of conventional post workflows.

How does NearTime integrate with VP Pro and Mo-Sys virtual production workflows?

NearTime is part of the VP Pro feature set, enabling automated cloud-based re-rendering of takes recorded with VP Pro’s VFX license. This creates a dual workflow where on-set real-time compositing is complemented by high-quality cloud renders in the same VFX delivery window.

How does NearTime relieve pressure on real-time rendering during virtual production shoots?

NearTime allows productions to accept lower “video game-quality” settings for real-time previews on set. After the shot, NearTime automatically re-renders Unreal scenes in the cloud at cinematic quality, freeing teams from balancing Unreal Engine image quality against real-time frame rates.

Is NearTime suitable for LED virtual production and icvfx workflows?

NearTime is primarily designed to be implemented in greenscreen shooting scenarios. However, it can be deployed for LED shoots in specific scenarios.

What delivery platforms does NearTime support for cloud-based rendering output?

NearTime can deliver rendered files to platforms such as Frame.io, Adobe Flow Capture and S3 storage. This flexibility allows virtual production teams to integrate the service into existing review, collaboration and asset management workflows.

What is NearTime and how does it fit into Unreal Engine virtual production workflows?

NearTime is an automated, cloud-based Unreal render service that re-renders virtual production scenes at higher quality and resolution after the shot is captured. It integrates with Unreal Engine Movie Render Queue to enhance virtual production final pixel quality beyond real-time limitations.

What network and system requirements are recommended for using NearTime in virtual production?

NearTime typically requires a stable domestic-level or better internet connection for sending camera and lens data to the cloud. It is integrated with Mo-Sys VP Pro and related systems, forming part of a real-time compositing pipeline and virtual production rendering workflow.

What resolutions and formats can NearTime deliver for cloud-based rendering?

NearTime supports UHD, 4K and 8K resolutions and can output various codecs and EXR layers via Unreal’s Movie Render Queue. Users can customise MRQ settings and add extra EXR layers to suit their virtual production rendering pipeline and budget.
