Programmable robotic rail - designed for PTZ heads
Compact jib built specifically for virtual studios and AR.
The aesthetically pleasing design of the StarTracker PTZ fits around the PTZ camera unit, enabling the full range of camera movement and zoom control.
Simple mounting to tripods, jibs, dollies, and rails, without a traditional camera head.
The combined StarTracker PTZ and PTZ camera can be moved manually or remotely using rails, jibs, or cranes. Because the tracking in StarTracker PTZ is absolute, the camera’s position in the virtual set is always known, and it never requires ‘homing’ on power-up.
As an optional extra, Mo-Sys have developed a control console to mount the StarTracker PTZ and 4K PTZ camera on a jib, and to operate the camera from the end of the jib. This allows full pan, tilt, zoom and focus control, using industry standard Jimmy jib input devices, and creates a highly cost-effective jib package with a remote head and 6 axes tracking for virtual studios and augmented reality.
The StarTracker PTZ takes in PTZ+focus tracking data from the PTZ head, fuses it with its own 6-dof position then sends it out, enabling full 3D 6-axes camera movement in a virtual studio. Whether mounted on a pedestal, rail or jib, the true 3D space of the virtual studio can then be revealed through parallax and perspective changes, creating a more compelling and immersive virtual set experience for the viewer.
The browser-based UI minimises the need for on-board monitors and supports the set-up and control of multiple StarTracker PTZ units across the studio from one interface. It features easy-to-use wizard processes for tasks such as map creation and auto-aligner, and is compatible with browser-based auto-translation tools for multi-language support.
Standard setup functions can be accessed using any common web browser, such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera or Edge, by logging into the StarTracker unit’s IP address (http) via the tracking ethernet network or hotspot (USB Wi-Fi connector required), without the need for internet access.
Yes, StarTracker PTZ can work in tandem with other Mo-Sys camera tracking systems, creating multi-camera environments where PTZ units and traditional cameras share a common virtual production workflow. This enables flexible studio designs combining tracked PTZ, pedestal and crane cameras for comprehensive AR graphics and broadcast graphics coverage.
Yes, StarTracker PTZ is ideal for newsroom environments where PTZ cameras form part of the robotic camera system, providing tracking data that aligns virtual sets and augmented reality graphics with automated camera moves. It integrates with existing broadcast robotics workflows to add virtual production capabilities without replacing PTZ hardware.
StarTracker PTZ is built on Mo-Sys’ camera tracking technology, delivering low-latency tracking data that keeps live broadcast graphics and AR graphics perfectly aligned with PTZ movements. Its real-time performance makes it suitable for fast-paced studios where camera moves and virtual elements must remain synchronised on-air.
StarTracker PTZ leverages Mo-Sys’ marker-based optical tracking for absolute position while integrating PTZ zoom and movement data, providing a hybrid solution that meets both marker-based tracking accuracy and flexible PTZ operation. It does not work with markerless camera tracking approaches and cannot cover areas outside the main star-mapped studio space.
StarTracker PTZ outputs camera tracking data compatible with Unreal Engine, allowing PTZ cameras to drive virtual production scenes, AR graphics and VFX elements in real time. This integration makes it easier for studios to adopt Unreal Engine-based virtual production workflows using existing PTZ infrastructure.
StarTracker PTZ combines optical tracking and PTZ data to deliver absolute camera tracking suitable for LED wall virtual production, feeding position and zoom information into real-time render engines. This enables PTZ cameras to contribute to immersive AR graphics and visual effects scenes within LED volumes and green screen virtual production studios.
StarTracker PTZ can be used in greenscreen virtual production studios, providing absolute camera tracking that ensures virtual backgrounds and graphics follow PTZ pan, tilt and zoom operations accurately. At the same time, it fits into traditional studio workflows as a camera tracking system for broadcast graphics overlays and augmented reality set extensions.
StarTracker PTZ is well suited to corporate studios and remote production setups that rely on PTZ cameras for efficient multi-angle coverage. By adding camera tracking, it allows these environments to introduce virtual production, AR graphics and visual effects without complex new hardware.
StarTracker PTZ is an add-on tracking system for the latest generation of 4K PTZ cameras from manufacturers such as Canon, Panasonic and Sony, adding 4 axes of camera tracking (X, Y, Z and zoom). It turns standard PTZ units into fully tracked devices for virtual production, AR graphics and broadcast graphics workflows.
The main benefit is that it transforms standard PTZ cameras into fully tracked devices capable of supporting virtual production, broadcast graphics and AR graphics, without replacing the core PTZ infrastructure. This upgrade unlocks new creative possibilities for studios, from immersive virtual sets to dynamic visual effects, using familiar PTZ control workflows.
